Smoke Escaping Past a Wolf Hood in Brookline: The Checks in Order

A hood that sounds powerful and still lets smoke past is usually being throttled downstream. Test the pull at each speed, wash the baffles and the blower wheel, then look hard at the duct: elbows, reducers, sagging flex and a damper that no longer opens.

Sunday, a steak going hard in a heavy pan, the hood on its highest setting — and the plume walks straight past the front lip of the liner and out into the hall. By the time the smoke detector at the top of the stairs joins in, everybody has an opinion, and almost all of those opinions are about the fan.

The fan is rarely the interesting part. A hood is the front end of a system that continues through a liner, a transition, a length of duct, a run of elbows, and a cap somewhere on the outside of the building. Every one of those has a say, and the last four are things nobody has looked at since the kitchen was built.

First, measure the pull instead of listening to it

Noise is not airflow. Switch the hood on and hold a single square of kitchen paper flat against the underside of the filters. If it stays there on its own, the hood is pulling. If you have to keep a finger on it, it is not. Repeat that at every speed rather than only at the top one.

The pattern across the settings is what makes this worth doing. Paper that grips on the highest setting and does nothing on the lower ones sends you to the speed control. Paper that barely holds anywhere, with clean filters in place, sends you downstream into the duct.

Now do it twice over: first with the kitchen sealed — door shut, windows down — and then again with a window cracked at the far end of the room. A visible improvement with something open is a supply-of-air answer rather than a duct answer, and it changes which section of this page is yours.

Where you live shapes what you find. Around Coolidge Corner, in the brick blocks along Beacon and Harvard, kitchens get renovated inside their original footprint and the building’s own ductwork decides where a hood is allowed to vent — which is not always where the kitchen designer drew it. In Longwood, the rowhouse kitchens up off narrow service stairs often end up venting through a run that was retrofitted around whatever was already in the ceiling.

What a loaded baffle does to a blower

Baffle filters and mesh filters fail differently and are worth telling apart. Baffles are stamped metal channels that shed grease by forcing air to change direction sharply; they are made to be washed and put back, and they fail gracefully by slowly restricting. Mesh traps by depth, loads faster, and once the grease has set hard in it, it never really comes clean again.

Washing baffles is a soak, not a scrub. Hot water, a proper degreasing detergent, and long enough for the deposit in the channels — where two baffles meet, which is the part you cannot see — to let go. Check the guide for your model before putting them through a dishwasher, because some finishes come out of that dull.

Grease that gets past the filters lands on the squirrel cage above the liner and builds up unevenly. That imbalance changes the sound before it changes the extraction: a new hum, a beat at start-up, a rumble that was not there a year ago. It is the part of a hood nobody ever cleans, and reaching it means taking the liner down.

To find out whether the filters were ever the problem, wash them, dry them, refit them and repeat the paper test at the same setting. If nothing has changed, you have eliminated them, which is a genuine result rather than a wasted evening.

Air out means air in

A blower cannot send out air the building will not let back in. Every cubic foot going up the duct has to arrive from somewhere — under a door, past a sash, down a flue — and in a well-sealed building it arrives grudgingly. The signs are consistent: the hood improves the moment something is opened, doors pull, and the motor sounds like it is straining.

More blower is not the answer to this one. The shortfall is on the intake side, and raising the demand against a fixed supply buys noise and motor load rather than extraction.

There is a second reason to take it seriously. Any appliance in the building that burns fuel and vents outside is drawing on the same air budget, and a powerful kitchen exhaust in a tight house can affect how those appliances vent. That is a question for a licensed heating installer. Make-up air provision itself is a code matter and belongs with a qualified installer, not with a homeowner and a tape measure.

Brookline is a study in extremes here. On Fisher Hill the big 1890s houses still have their chimneys and their old service wings, and they leak air in a dozen places without being asked. Out at Putterham, the post-war ranches and split-levels have been re-sided, re-windowed and insulated over the last twenty years, and the hood is now the largest fan in a house that has stopped breathing.

Run length, elbows and the reducer someone fitted

The duct is the part almost nobody inspects, and it is where most of the missing airflow has gone. A ninety-degree turn costs far more resistance than the space it occupies, which is why installation manuals talk about equivalent length instead of the tape-measure figure. Count the turns between the liner and the outside before you count the feet.

Diameter is the harsher constraint. Any point where the run steps down to a smaller section sets the ceiling for the entire run — the generous duct either side of it is simply irrelevant. The usual version is a transition squeezed to clear a joist bay, fitted once, buried in ceiling, and never mentioned again.

Flexible duct substituted for rigid does the same damage in a slower way. The corrugations drag along every foot of the run, and flex that has sagged between its hangers turns into a series of low spots that catch what the filters missed.

The termination is the last inch and often the whole problem. Wall and roof caps have a damper that should swing open when the blower starts and drop shut when it stops. Paint, hardened grease, an insect screen someone added, or nesting material will hold it closed against a perfectly good duct. Have somebody start the hood while you watch the cap from the ground or from a window. Nobody needs to be on a roof for this, and in Putterham, where a single-storey kitchen usually ducts straight up through the attic, that is exactly where the cap is.

Speed control and motor faults

A control fault and a restriction feel different once you know what to compare. A restriction is worst at the top setting, because that is where the blower asks for most and the run gives least. A control fault ignores the duct entirely: the hood sits on one speed whatever you press, or refuses the highest setting, or arrives at full speed the moment it starts.

Sound separates the rest. A failing speed control tends to give a motor that hums without coming up to speed, or steps that are indistinguishable from one another. A failing motor announces itself through the bearings — a rising screech, a rattle that tracks with speed, a start that needs a nudge before it takes. A capacitor problem often shows as a hum for a second or two and then nothing.

Lights working while the blower does nothing is more useful than it looks. It rules out the supply to the hood and the panel’s own power, which leaves the blower circuit, its control and the motor. When to stop testing and pick up the phone

You can reasonably finish the following yourself: washing and refitting the baffles, running the paper test at every speed with the room shut and again with it open, clearing anything visibly stuck in an accessible wall cap, and watching the damper from the ground while someone else works the switch.

Stop at anything electrical or structural. A burning smell, a breaker that goes when the hood starts, a blower that will not turn at all, any job that needs the liner to come down, and anything that involves a ladder above one storey.

A visit puts numbers on what you have been estimating: static pressure across the run, what the motor draws against what it should, and whether the damper actually opens under load. Those three readings usually settle the argument between “the hood is tired” and “the duct was wrong from the start”.

How often should baffle filters be cleaned?

As often as your own cooking loads them, which is the only honest answer available. A kitchen that sears and fries several nights a week needs them out far more frequently than one that mostly boils and bakes. Lift them monthly at first and look at the channels rather than the faces; once you know how quickly they fill, you have your interval.

Can I use flexible duct instead of rigid?

It costs airflow along every foot, because the internal ribbing drags on the air in a way smooth-walled rigid duct does not, and any sag between hangers becomes a low spot. Whether it is permitted at all is a code question for your installer rather than a matter of preference. Where the manual specifies rigid for the model, treat that as a requirement.

Should I fit a more powerful blower?

Rarely the right move. If the run is restricted or the building cannot supply replacement air, a bigger blower raises demand against the same bottleneck and hands you noise instead of extraction. Establish first whether the limit is the filters, the duct or the house. Where the duct turns out to be undersized, correcting the duct is what actually changes the result.
