Something worth understanding before you start blaming the clean cycle: it rarely breaks anything that was in good health. What it does is take every component in the cavity to the hottest condition it will ever see, hold it there, and expose whatever was already close to the end of its life. A door that stays locked afterwards is usually the first visible result of that examination, and occasionally it is not the only one.

The cool-down is part of the cycle

The latch does not release on a countdown. What frees it is a temperature: the control holds the door until its reading of the cavity drops below a set figure, which happens long after the heat stops. The end of the cycle is not the moment the burning smell fades — it is the moment the metal is cool. A heavily insulated cavity gives up that heat slowly, and it is meant to.

From the kitchen there is very little to see, which is why so many people conclude something has gone wrong. The panel may display a cooling indication or nothing in particular, a fan may keep running, and the handle stays solid the whole time. All of that is normal behaviour, and interfering with it achieves nothing.

Use the wait productively. Note whether the display is alive and answers a press, whether anything is still running, and whether a code has appeared — copy the characters down exactly, since they will not survive the first interruption of power. The specific duration you should expect is in your own model’s use and care guide; a figure quoted for a different series is not worth having. The wait stops being reasonable once the door itself is cool to the hand, the appliance has been silent for a long while, and the latch is still holding.

Press a button and watch. If the display responds, the control is alive and the question is either temperature or the latch. If nothing lights, look at the breaker — and look at it properly, because a tripped breaker can sit in a midway position that reads as closed at a glance. If the breaker is intact and the panel is still dead, the likely candidate is a thermal fuse. It is a one-shot protective device: if the temperature around it exceeds the limit the design permits, it opens and stays open. It cannot be reset, it will not recover as things cool, and it has to be replaced. The clean cycle is the operation most likely to find one that had been marginal for years, which is exactly the pattern this article is about.

One power cycle at the breaker is a fair test — off, pause, on, observe. Repeating it is not. If a fault in the heating circuit is what opened the protection in the first place, forcing power back onto that circuit again and again is asking for a second, larger failure.

What the latch is, and the two ways it fails

Two parts sit under the trim above the door and do the whole job: a motor that pushes a bolt across the door frame, and a switch whose sole function is reporting back where that bolt has actually got to. The control refuses to declare the door open until the switch confirms it. That arrangement produces two failures which present identically from outside.

Either the motor was commanded and did not move — nothing travelled, the switch honestly reports a locked door, and the control believes it — or the motor moved, the bolt withdrew, and the switch failed to confirm the fact, leaving the control convinced it is still locked while the mechanism is in fact clear. You cannot tell those apart by looking at a closed door. A meter can, in a few minutes.

Heat provides a third variation. Clearances that were generous when everything was cold can bind at the top of a clean cycle, and carbonised spatter can settle exactly where the bolt needs to travel. Both are ordinary findings after a hot run and neither is a sign of abuse.

That is where a homeowner’s involvement ends. This is a high-current appliance with a hot cavity, and the assembly is behind trim that is not designed to be removed with the unit in place. When patience has been exhausted, hand it to Oven Repair.

What a fault code is worth

A code is a starting point, and a good one, but it describes the condition the control noticed rather than naming the part responsible. A lock-related code means the control did not get the confirmation it wanted; whether that is the motor, the switch, the wiring between them or the control itself is a separate question that the code cannot answer.

The behaviour of the code matters as much as the code. One that clears after a single power cycle and never returns points at a transient — a momentary disagreement during a hot cycle. One that reappears the instant power is restored is describing a condition that is still present, which is far more useful information.

So write it down before you interrupt anything. Codes are commonly lost when the breaker goes off, and the reconstruction people offer over the phone an hour later — “it was a letter and some numbers” — costs a diagnosis that would otherwise have been half made before anyone arrived.

What a technician can do that you cannot

Some things end the waiting immediately: a smell of burning electrics, a breaker that goes a second time after one reset, discolouration or scorching where the trim meets the frame, or a latch still holding hours after everything has gone stone cold. Switch it off at the breaker and call.

A visit puts a meter on the things you cannot reach. Is the protective fuse intact end to end? Does the latch motor draw current when the control calls for it? What is the position switch reporting back? And, this being a stress-test failure, did an element or a sensor go the same way in the same hour without anyone noticing yet? None of those questions can be answered from a kitchen stool.

The oven opened but now will not heat — are the two related?

Very likely. A protective thermal fuse that opened during the hot cycle can interrupt the heating circuit while leaving other functions looking normal, and an element close to the end of its life often gives out under clean-cycle conditions. Both are typical stress-test outcomes rather than coincidences. Treat the two symptoms as one investigation instead of booking them as separate jobs.

The display shows a code — does that tell me which part failed?

No. A code records the condition the control observed — for example that it never received confirmation the bolt had withdrawn — and several different components can produce that same condition. Note whether it clears after one power cycle and stays clear, or comes straight back, because that behaviour narrows things down more than the code does. Copy the exact characters before interrupting power.

Can I force the door open?

No. The mechanism is not designed to be overridden by hand, and levering it generally damages the latch assembly, the door and the surrounding trim, so one repair becomes three. If the cavity has gone completely cold and the door is still held, that is a fault to be diagnosed rather than defeated. Switch off at the breaker and arrange a visit.
